On Monday, April 8, 2024, in Madison, Wisconsin, President Joe Biden addressed an audience, focusing on the hot-button issue of student loans, which continues to stir debate across the nation. Captured by Daniel Steinle for Bloomberg and Getty Images, his appearance comes as a reminder of the challenges and solutions emerging in the field of student debt.

Last year, in 2023, the Supreme Court halted President Biden’s ambitious plan to provide sweeping student loan forgiveness to millions of borrowers. This setback didn’t stop his administration from pursuing alternatives. By enhancing existing debt relief programs within the Education Department, they still managed to significantly reduce the nation’s student debt burden.

Reflecting on this journey, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona shared, “Four years ago, President Biden pledged to overhaul a flawed student loan system. We rose to the challenge, addressing and fixing existing programs that hadn’t delivered the promised relief. We took decisive action to support borrowers misled by their institutions and offered financial comfort to diligent Americans.”

In a recent development, the U.S. Department of Education announced that it has completed a review of payment counts for borrowers enrolled in income-driven repayment (IDR) plans. These plans, which forgive loans after 20 or 25 years, had been marred by complaints over incorrect tracking by loan servicers. Determined to tackle these issues, the Biden administration initiated corrective measures.

Now, borrowers can log into Studentaid.gov to see an updated, accurate payment count, providing much-needed clarity and transparency. This move marks a significant step forward in ensuring that borrowers receive the relief they’ve been promised, aligning with the administration’s ongoing efforts to address student debt.
