To the editor: A while back, I penned a letter to The Times praising David L. Ulin for his engaging piece that followed Holden Caulfield’s footsteps across Manhattan in “The Catcher in the Rye.” I’m compelled once again to extend my appreciation, this time for his evocative narrative on the daily solace of strolling through his neighborhood in Los Angeles.
Ulin artfully highlights the distinctiveness of the various communities that make this region rich in character, steering clear of the impersonal feel of urban sprawl.
I felt a pang of sadness when Ulin left The Times. However, similar to the comfort he derives from encountering familiar faces during his daily walks, I’m reassured whenever I spot his byline in the Opinion section, still graced with his signature eloquence.
