Four years ago, I received the life-changing news of a cervical cancer diagnosis, thanks to the ever-dreaded human papillomavirus, commonly known as HPV. (“Trust survivors: You do not want an HPV-caused cancer. Get vaccinated,” letters, Dec. 31).
My journey through this battle involved a complete hysterectomy, accompanied by intense chemotherapy and radiation sessions. Fortunately, both the surgery and subsequent treatments were successful in fighting off the cancer.
However, I’ve learned that this persistent and sly virus still lurks within me, compelling me to remain vigilant for other potential threats, such as anal cancer.
I can’t stress enough the importance of getting vaccinated against HPV for those who are eligible. Protect yourself before it’s too late.
