To the editor: I really appreciated your insightful article on how Latino voters in Downey are leaning towards President-elect Donald Trump. However, I believe adding a bit more context could enrich the discussion.
In Downey, Trump received just 1,656 more votes in 2024 compared to 2020. What’s more telling is that Vice President Kamala Harris secured 8,520 fewer votes than President Biden did in the previous election. This shift indicates that voters in Downey didn’t necessarily rally around Trump but rather pulled back from Harris.

To the editor: Political strategist Mike Madrid suggests that the drift of Latino voters to the political right can be attributed to the younger generation’s unfamiliarity with California’s Proposition 187 from 1994.
However, it’s crucial to note that every one of them witnessed the previous Trump administration’s harsh policies, especially the separation of nearly 5,000 immigrant children from their families. Such deliberate acts of cruelty should have dissuaded any person with strong moral convictions from supporting Trump. It’s disheartening to see that many didn’t recognize the gravity of those actions.
